Northeast India, also known as the Northeastern region or simply the Northeast, refers to the easternmost region of India. It is a distinct geographical and political entity within the country. The region is bordered by Bhutan and Tibet (China) to the north, Myanmar (Burma) to the east, Bangladesh to the south, and the Indian states of West Bengal and Bihar to the west.
Northeast India comprises eight states, which are:
1. Arunachal Pradesh: Known as the "Land of the Rising Sun," it is the easternmost state of India and is known for its scenic beauty, diverse tribal cultures, and Buddhist monasteries.
2. Assam: The largest and most populous state in the Northeast, Assam is famous for its tea plantations, wildlife sanctuaries, and the mighty Brahmaputra River.
3. Manipur: Located in the eastern part of the region, Manipur is known for its rich cultural heritage, beautiful landscapes, and the classical dance form called Manipuri.
4. Meghalaya: Translating to "the abode of clouds," Meghalaya is known for its stunning landscapes, including the living root bridges, picturesque waterfalls, and the capital city of Shillong, often called the "Scotland of the East."
5. Mizoram: A state with a majority Christian population, Mizoram is known for its vibrant festivals, picturesque landscapes, and its efforts in promoting education and literacy.
6. Nagaland: Known for its distinct tribal culture and scenic beauty, Nagaland is often called the "Land of Festivals" due to the numerous tribal festivals celebrated throughout the year.
7. Sikkim: Although geographically a part of the Northeast, Sikkim is a landlocked state nestled in the Himalayas and shares its borders with Nepal, Tibet (China), and Bhutan. It is known for its snow-capped mountains, Buddhist monasteries, and rich biodiversity.
8. Tripura: Located in the southwestern part of the region, Tripura is known for its historical and archaeological sites, including the famous Ujjayanta Palace and Neermahal Palace.
The Northeast is culturally diverse, with a wide range of ethnic groups and languages spoken throughout the region.
